I Romans

A few days behind the schedule set out in their marching orders, the first unit of Imperial Romans strides off the painting table!

"Pila at the ready!"

These are Auxilia in chain mail armor.

The  coat of "magic wash" really brought these figures to life!

These are Black Tree Designs figures, purchased during one of their many sales. They were raised chiefly to bolster the infantry arm of my Palmyran army in their fight against the Sassanid Persians next month at Historicon.

  1. First rate addition, Peter! How will those pila at the ready hold up during battle? Look a bit pliable (or is that pila-ble?) to me? I really wish BTD produced Romans and opponents for the earlier Republican era.

    1. They are bendable, but very well modeled. They are super glued to the edge of the shields for a bit more stability!

    2. Have BTD come out with any new figures in a while? It doesn't seem like it. My Republican Romans and Carthaginians are mostly Minifigs and Old Glory, with some Ral Partha thrown in. Aventine makes a great line for Republican Rome...

  4. They look great Peter!
You certainly like to set yourself some serious wargaming goals with all that you have planned for Historicon this year!

    1. The change in jobs has me working more instead of less, so I am hoping that I can get everything done in time this year!
What are you up to, James? It has been a bit quiet on your wend lately!

    2. We've been doing heaps of wargames, but I lost the 'urge' to blog about them. This got added to with Dad's passing.
Back in the blogging saddle now though!!

    3. Blogging takes time, as we both well know. If you're spending it playing games, well what's better than that?!

  7. I think these are some of your best work -- they look really good. Do you know the name/brand of the metal color you are using for the armor/pilum?

    1. Thanks! Honestly, in this case it's the sculpting and the dark magic wash. The ONLY shading is the flesh tones, nothing else. the armor, helmets, pila are all painted with Valejo "Oily Steel' (Acero engrasado). I absolutely love this color for armor! I like all the Valejo acrylic metalics, but this one is the best of the lot.

    1. Thanks, Iain. The Romans are all painted, it's now the Palmyran and Sassanid additions I'm cranking out. It will take awhile for all of the Legion troops to appear here, though!
