Galactic Kampaigns - Part 2: Who's the Enemy, anyway?

To start a campaign, first we must determine who the combatants will be. You could just choose the factions yourself depending upon what fleets you have or what match ups you are interested in exploring. Otherwise, first, choose the faction that you will play. Then roll a D10 and cross reference the result with the faction to be played on the table below to find your opposition for the campaign:

The table above is my take on the probabilities of conflict based on the size, aggressiveness, history, and stellar geography as presented in the background materials accompanying Galactic Knights and the various Fleet supplements. Feel free to modify it according to your own needs. Rebels = a Rebel faction of the same race. This only appears for the Carnivorans, who are plagued by chronic infighting, and the Terrans, where there are already multiple splinter factions including Nova Liberia and the Kmet. If you don't want to fight rebels, simply roll again until another faction comes up.

"Stop calling it Aggression; we hate that Expression"

Our entire campaign will take place in a single star system; you should name it for flavor and reference! If desired, take the same from the star maps accompanying the rules, maps from other sources, or from the pages of History and/or Science Fiction, or just make up a likely sounding name.

Campaign Morale
This is a key number in the SN Campaign system, as when it drops to zero for either side, the campaign is over, and the side reaching zero has lost (higher is better). I've assigned each Faction a rating, and explained my rationale for them below. rating will go up and/or down in the course of the campaign. There is no maximum Campaign Morale.

Terrans           4  (Expansionist)
Avarians         4  (favor defending their existing territory, diplomacy, but have sustained prolonged conflicts)
Entomalians    4  (Hive mind - the will of the individual is all but unimportant)
Carnivorans    3  (fractious, prone to infighting)
Aquarians       3  (prefer to choose their fights and keep losses to a minimum, their watery planets are inhospitable to other factions and all but impossible for others to hold for any length of time)
Rebels           3  (lack the resources for a protracted fight)

To determine which faction controls the systrem, roll a D6 for each faction and add their Campaign Morale, plus an additional +1 if the faction is Entomalian. The higher total is Contesting the system, and the lower is Controlling the system.  Re-roll any ties.

Crew Quality and REPutation
Star Navy assigns ships a REPutation ranging from a low of 2 (merchants, some pirates) to a high of 5 (the best ships and crew). It reflects the quality of both the ship's crew and also its systems. We'll need to use this concept for the campaign, but for our GK purposes we'll make it a bit more literally just Crew Quality, as follows:

Crew Rating Rep #
Raw 2
Green 3
Veteran 4
Elite 5

We'll also use this to re-balance the fleets a bit; the Aquarians in particular are supposed to have very well trained crews, so they will tend to have better crew Qualities. The Entomalians will have the worst crews on average, initiative generally being discouraged. We'll give the Terrans slightly above average crews (the Terran Navy has been fighting somebody almost nonstop since its inception), and the Avarians and Carnivorans  more or less average.

Mission: Improbable

The first mission of a Campaign will always be a PATROL mission. The first mission will be played with a single squadron of 3 ships (4 if you are playing the Entomalians - "Quantity has a Quality all its own!"). Subsequent missions will be rolled (using a D10)  for depending upon the nature of the previous Mission, and whether it was a Success or a Failure:

Fleets, Ships and Class

At this point, it is necessary to make a digression to look at the various kinds of ships available to the Factions, and compare them. Then we can formulate a rating system to translate that used in Star Navy 5150 into Galactic Knights terms.

Here are the ships of the various factions (standard designs as in the rule books)

TERRANS
The Terrans (or properly, the Terran Trans-solar Federation originated on Earth and the earliest worlds coloninized by humans. Like humans often will, there soon developed political divisions and separatist movements, most prominently Nova Liberia and The Khmet. Terran ships are more or less the baseline agaist which other races's navies are compared. The humans developed shield technology, but it was only months into the unexpected war with the Avarians before they managed to steal and/or copy it.

AVARIANS
The Avarians (again, more properly the Avarian United Worlds, or  "Tweeties" in the slang that Terran spacers use) are a race of birdlike creatures somewhat smaller than humans in size. They fought a bitter war  with the Terrans based upon mutual misunderstandings following First Contact. Aty present, there is an uneasy truce between the Terrans and the Avarians as a result of the much greater threat posed by the Entomalioan Invasion. That is not to say that no conflict occurs between them, but such fighting as occurs now is usually limited to jockeying for advantage  in uninhabited border systems. Natural pilots, the Avarian Carriers and fighters are decidedly superior to the Terran equivalents, and they rely heavily on Fighters and Missile combat, plus their powerful but short ranged Rail Guns.

ENTOMALIANS
Properly the Entomalian Empire, but "Bugs" or "Maggots" to Terrans, this race of advanced insectoid creatures is rigidly heirarchical, the social structure being reinforced by short range telepathy on the part of the Queens. Entonmalian Technology stagnated centuries ago, and thus they lack shields and electronic countermeasures. However, their ships are heavily armored and durable, and are produced in seeminmgly limitless numbers by a process part biological and part mechanical.

CARNIVORANS
The Carnivoran Republic is composed of "Priodes" of varying degree of influence. There is constant jockeying for power both within and between Prides. The Carnivorans resemble large Lions in appearance, although Terran spacer slang for them is "Kitties". Most contact with them has been raiders, but it is belied the Prides will likley unite if their core worlds are seriously threatened. Their space faring technology is relatively new and ppoorly developed, including a lack of Shields. They make up for this by using especially strong polyphase armor, and shield stripping missile technology. Carnivoran ships generally mount large numbers of relatively short range weapons, favoring close in combat.

AQUARIANS
The Aquarian Alliance is an enigma in many ways. They have the been in space the longest, and have the most advanced technology. They prefer to maintain a neutral stance, and thus may be aiding a faction in one sector and opposing it elsewhere. The Aquarians ("Fishies" to Terran spacers) resemble rather short, bipedal fish and are water breathers.  There ships are relatively lightly armorted, but their use of Nannite technology allows it to "shift" to the most threatened area of the ship. Their fighters use launch tubes and thus the fighter bays are much better protected than on other ships. They use their Harpoon missiles to dampen the energy of all weapons employed by the targeted ship. Finally, their specialized Pulse cannons tend to strip off armor and superficial systems without damaging jump engines or life support. All of these support the Aquarian tactical doctrine which calls for limiting loss of life on target vessels.

(I decided to leave out the Super Galactic Dreadnoughts due to the size and costs of the models, great as they are - those so inclined might add them to the Class 6 ship lists).

OK, if you've borne with me through all that, great; if not, here's the final results:

Ship Generation  and Task Force Tables by Fleet and Class

The Generation tables are used to generate opposition forces as they are encountered, as well as any friendly reinforcements. They should also be used to rate your own ships as far as Crew Quality. The very first (PATROL) mission of the game uses a single squadron form the task force list of the player's choice - the Flagship is the largest ship (Class 3-4-5-6) with the highest Crew Quality.

I suggest choosing a character name for a captain in this squadron, with the campaign narrative being from his or her perspective. Any reinforcements gained would be assigned first to this squadron. This is strictly optional, of course.

For subsequent missions, use an entire Task force. Note that only a fraction of those forces will ordinarily appear in a given table top action.  If you have lost of time and ships, you can take an entire Fleet of up to 3 task forces, or  more likely, just reinforce the Task Force with the Flag Squadron of the fleet. Once again, feel free to alter your suggested forces, or even generate them randomly.

Task Force Composition (same for all fleets, except the Entomalians. For them, add an additional ship to each squadron (of the lowest down ship on the list of that  Squadron). Of course, if you feel like mixing it up more by faction, or changing them in any way to suit your tastes or collection,  be my guest! As the enemy forces are generated based upon what you are bringing to any given table top encounter, it does't really matter that much!

We will use these tables, along with others, extensively when we come to generate the enemy forces our heroes will encounter during their Missions. Carrying out those Missions will be the subject of the next post in this series.

  1. Wow, this is well laid out. Hope it is a lot of fun for you guys.

  2. A lot of it is just "thinking out loud" to get to the actual tables. the overall concept is very much Star Navy; I am merely adapting their ideas to my rules of choice!

At this point i plan to run some Galactic Knights (along with Filed of Battle and Pulse of battle) at Historicon, probably having each game be a "mission".
