American Militia, Revolutionary War

Here's the first American unit for my Revolutionary War project.

Aside from the Continental troops raised by and (theoretically, at least) paid by the Continental Congress, there were also various state regiments, raised and (theoretically, at least) paid by the various  state governments. Finally there local militias, what we might think of, probably inaccurately, as "minutemen".

Troops such as these were raised for short periods of service, from a day or two, up to perhaps 3 months.

Most probably wore civilian clothes, but you will perhaps indulge me if that's a bit too much for me; my troops require a semblance of uniforms. So my Militia units will have an overall theme, here "brown coats with red facings". The coats are of varying patterns and shades of brown, and there i little uniformity in the rest of the equipment. The flag is a "Son's of Liberty" flag, 7 red and 6 white stripes for the 13 colonies, which was especially seen in the earlier days of the Revolution.

These are Brigade Games figures from the "American Militia" sets, with the flag by Adolfo Ramos.

  1. American militia is always seems like a good opportunity to try out all the browns in the paint collection. Lovely work Peter.

  2. Lovely work there and the muted natural colours work well for Militia regiments I feel.

  3. Great looking figures for the early phase in the conflict. Nice use of a limited pallete.

    1. Almost all of the battles of the AWI have some local militia on the patriot side, even at the end of the conflict, but you are correct, especially prominent in the the early years. I have quite a few more to come!

  5. Your Militia unit look great and you can't have enough of them! Your uniform not uniform works well too!

    1. This is probably about as uniform as the actual continentals got, but they will be done in a more idealized fashion.

  7. I really like the lanky, authentic proportions on these figures. Really gives the right period feel.
Great paintwork as well. They feel very authentic.

    1. If you're familiar with Paul Hick's sculpts, that's fairly typical for him. I thought it suited the Patriot forces well as opposed to the better fed Perrys that I am using for the British and their allies. I also liked the idea of using a British manufacturer for the British and their allies, and an American one for the Patriots!

    2. Interestingly, American colonists were often better fed than British regulars…at least until the colonists joined the rebel forces.

    3. That's probably true; I'm sure both sides had major challenges keeping their forces supplied with food, gunpowder, etc; we know shoes and uniforms were a constant challenge for the American army!

    1. Hey, without them we wouldn't have "Hamilton"! :-)
