** FLASH!** We interrupt your regularly scheduled Napoleonic Battle Report coverage to bring you something completely different! Coverage of the Battle of Caldiero will resume shortly!
Major General Christopher Potley's regiment of Foot was commissioned in August of 1643, and fought at Alton Church and the siege of Arundel in that year. It was part of Sir William Waller's Army of the Southern Association.
General Potley had previously fought in the Swedish army.
Some time in 1644, the colonelcy passed to Colonel David Leighton, and the regiment saw action at Cheriton, the siege of Sudley Castle, Copredy Bridge, the siege of Wareham, the siege of Donnington Castle, and finished the year itself under siege at Taunton.
In April of 1645 if formed part of Sir Hardress Waller's regiment of the new Model Army.
1645 was a very busy year for the Regiment, which fought at Naseby, the siege of Leicester, Langport, the siege of Bridgewater, the siege of Shelbourne Castle, the siege of Bristol, the siege of Devizes, the siege of Lacok House, the siege of Winchester, the 3rd siege of Basing House, and the siege of Exeter.
My chief reason for choosing this regiment was more pragmatic; IO wanted a yellow coated regiment to join my Parliamentarian forces, and there were few candidates. It is not even certain this regiment wore yellow coats, but close enough!
I painted the coats Delta Ceramcoat Mello Yellow , and then stained them with Opaque Yellow. Figures are Old Glory 25's.
The only reference to the flags of the Regiment ids that it had black flags upon entry to the New Model, and may have worn grey coats by then. Being a man of Order, my regiments have matching flag and coat colors wherever possible.
I couldn't find any heraldic in formation on Sir Christopher (I thought of black caldrons!), and in the end decided still to be whimsical with green deer, a bit of a reference to his Swedish service.
Nice! I like the yellow jackets. While I have a yellow-clad Royalist regiment in my collection, no such Parliament unit. Perhaps I should add this to the list of units to field?
ReplyDeletePer the BCW site, the other main candidate would be William Waller's own regiment of Foote.
DeleteLovely ECW troops, Peter. Nice historical background for the unit too.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dean. I have a few m ore ECW regiments to add, and that will be it; my original collection of Minifigs dating back to the mid 1970's, is already pretty substantial.
DeleteThese fellows look excellent - very determined. Of course they wore yellow jackets - can anyone prove they didn't? You have to practise your dismissive smirk in front of the mirror.
ReplyDeleteThe dismissive smirk is best accompanied by an aristocratic faux-French accent, I think! :-)
DeleteIs that the Ceramcote Straw again Peter? It's a nice subtle yellow which works very well. Nice work.
ReplyDeleteNot the Straw this time, but Mello Yellow stained Opaque Yellow (and then dulled a bit by the black "magic wash").
DeleteAny color called Mello Yellow deserves to be placed upon historical figures! They look cool to boot!
ReplyDeleteCheers
Kevin
Thanks, Kevin! It is a very light yellow, more of a yellowish light tan,
DeleteExcellent work!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words, Michal!
DeleteCracking job Peter, lovely colors!
ReplyDeleteMerci, Phil!
ReplyDeleteYou going to be trying new ECW rules in FOB for these ?
ReplyDeletees; I really like FK&P, but I am going to try FoB3 too!
DeleteExcellent looking Parliamentary foot! I could also only think of Waller's regiment but you would have to put up with a blue flag!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks, Iain!
DeleteA BLUE flag with YELLOW coats? Perish the thought! :-)
