LANNES Campaign: Set up for Battle #3, 1806

Barry and I had time after game #2 of our LANNES Campaign to do the post game rolls, so we did so. It has only taken me a month top post them, though! The campaign scheme calls for adding 3 new units to each side. I rolled up a much needed 6 lber foot battery and yet ANOTHER 2 Light infantry units. Barry rolled up another Line infantry, a 6 lber foot battery, plus a Dragoon unit to bolster his weak cavalry arm.

After that we rolled for the fate of the existing units. Of my 14 units, 2 were degraded (one of which had no effect as it was already as bad as it could get!), 2 were unchanged, and the remaining 8 went up one for their Defense of Combat die type. Francois Faucon (C-in-C), Fabien LeFerme, and Rene Renard all improved their Leadership Die by one, whilst Simeon Souris' poltroon-ery was evidently noticed by his troops, degrading one Die Type. The newcomer, Henri Hibou, evidently didn't see enough action to impress his troops one way or the other. The D10/D8 unit must be the Invalid Company, I think!

We then moved on to the pregame setup (taken directly from FoB2). This time we forgot to apply the random modifiers to each of the die types, but it's zero sum game anyway. so we won't worry about it. The rolls came out as noted below. This time out I managed to lose all 4 rolls! :

Next, we  rolled for the Warplan 5/5 district the 3rd battle of the Campaign was to take place in. This time we had to go on to the 3rd district, as the first 2 were clearly unsuitable. One was open sea, which would actually work out fine if we had a naval component to the campaign. That is something to consider next time. I t would be easy enough to do a cross walk from Land to Sea Units, maybe decreasing the numbers by 50%..

In any event, that left us with the third of the three districts generated, 5B.22. The  adjacent card in my files is 6B, so I just went with that for the purposes of nearby terrain.

The WarPlan 5/5 Atlas describes district  5B.22 as follows: "Soft, cultivated land. Farm. Fences. River fordable all year. Very bad roads in wet weather".  It was determined that the French will enter from the "West" (edges with the road, river, and hill), while the Russians will enter from the East (fittingly!), the side with the road and 3 small copses of woods. One of my Commands will be delayed a  number of MOVEs to be determined. In the first 2 games, the side so disadvantaged has won!

The nearest village is in 5B.23, ORITANA, which is noted to have a high stone tower. A likely name for this next one might be the Battle of Oritango Downs. in a partial nod to both the nearby village, as well as a certain well known member of The Miniatures Page!

Royal Foot Artillery

I managed to finish up my British foot Artillery a week or two ago. These are Old Glory 28mm crew figures with Wargames Foundry Artillery pieces, both purchased 2 - 3 years ago. My British army was getting seriously behind on ordnance, so this should go a long way to correct that. I still have enough left over pieces, as  seen, to add at least a couple more batteries in the future,

A battery armed with 9 lber cannon.

The British foot artillery uniform is surprisingly elaborate, with the bands of yellow lace on the chest....

Yellow trim on the scarlet collars

and yellow lace on the cuffs as well.

The white pants were evidently worn for home duty, and grey in the field.

That makes sense, as the white would be very impractical around the grime of black powder etc... but I like the look of the white pants!

The next battery is armed with 6 lbers.

I see I left off the brass badges on the cartridge boxes. Even worse, in one of those wonderfully British idiosyncrasies, the RFA used white cartridge boxes instead of black. Oh bugger, now I'll HAVE to go back and fix those now!

The Foot Artillery could wear yellow cords on their shako, but these 28 mm Old Glory figures don't have them, cast on so I left them off.

Plain white plumes were standard on the shako.

The turn backs are sometimes shown white piped yellow or red piped yellow. I might go back and ad a slash of red on them.

All three batteries, plus enough spare tubes for a couple more eventually!

A nice but deadly firing line!

OK, so I did it; cartridge boxes now painted off white, brass badges added, and red added to the turnbacks.

Damned obsessive compulsive tendencies!

Most people would probably never notice, but now i would!

I have several units on the painting table presently, all from the same era. Any guesses as to what they might be?

Numidian Light Cavalry - 1st Corps

When I orered my Hussites earlier this year, I threw in  some more Numidian Light Cavalry. As my 25/28mm  Carthaginian armies have expanded over the years, the contingent of these famously skilled horsemen became disproportionately small. Hannibal sent out the order to recruit more, and they are now ready for action!

I got one Command pack and one regular pack. I think the fellow on the far right is supposed to have a conch  shell trumpet or something in his hand.

I'm not sure I like the blue shields on this unit. The turquoise color is lovely, bu it seems too bright for these horsemen; I think I may repaint them black (and leave the blue bits otherwise).

The figures are nicely sculpted, and had little flash.

Nice detail sculpted on the rope holters.

I used the "Officer" figure from the command pack to ad some variety to this second small unit.

Quite dynamic poses! I found surprisingly  few manufacturers do Numidians in 28mm; they are notably lacking from the Old Glory range, for example,

I think I may dry brush the hair to bring out some of the detail and decrease the shine from the varnish.

I used the "Goop" for gluing the Javelins, shields, and riders, and I have to say that it worked very well. It seems stronger than the Duco cement as well.

Update: I acted on my inclinations, and also took Phil's suggestion. I painted the yellow shields over with Raw Sienna, and the blue ones with Black. I also dry brushed the hair with CC Hippo Grey.

I then used my index finger to make spots, using Craftsmart Bisque on the black shields and Craftsmart Khaki on the brown ones. I feathered the edges a bit with an old brush with splayed bristles. Much better!  Thank you, Phil!
