The nature of the terrain in North America placed increased emphasis on light infantry troops and tactics. Despite American legend and propaganda the contrary, after fighting two wars with the French, the British were not unaware of this,
Begun during the Seven Years War, the practice of having light infantry companies in the regular regiments was discontinued after its conclusion in 1763, but re-introduced again in 1771.
My Light Infantry are a composite of companies from 4 regiments, the same as their Grenadier fellows -the 21st (dark blue facings), 24th (willow green), 47th (white), and 62nd (yellow/buff) regiments.
The Light Infantry were distinguished by the shorter cut of their jackets, black crossbelts, and caps in place of the tricornes of the regulars.
The caps came in a variety of styles, most incorporating 4 metal chains, intended to give the wearer some protection from saber cuts. These Perry Figures come supplied hatless, but with sprues for a variety of styles of headwear which are attached to the figure. I think at least one I glued on backwards, perhaps trying to rock a 1990's vibe? :-)
The Flagstaff has been trimmed down and gilded. Like the Grenadiers, my troops get a flag, in this case the King's color of one of the composite units. I mounted these guys with 2 figures on six 1 x 2" bases instead pf 4 figures on three 2 inch square bases. That allows depiction of skirmish line, and also 6 figures units recommended for such troops in Rebels and Patriots.
Lovely looking unit, the Revolutionary War is a great one for light infantry like the FIW before, a great addition to your project.

DeleteAgreed. A handsome collection of specialists. The AWI is a veritable goldmine of interesting uniforms and variations/modifications thereof. Is the fellow in the green coat (front rank, furthest to the left) from Tarleton's Legion, or another formation?

He's a hornist in reversed colors ()Willow Green). The Queen's rangers will be forthcoming eventually, among any others. Just started work on a unit wearing *purple* hunting shirts!
DeleteThe project is coming together at quick speed. Lovely work Peter.
ReplyDeleteA dynamic looking unit.
ReplyDeleteLooking good! I like the different posing. Nice work!
