HAVOC 2026, Part 3: Punic Wars with To the Strongest!

Saturday night at HAVOC I was scheduled to run my Battle of Geronium scenario from the Punic Wars using Simon Miller's To the Strongest! rules. Here's the game set up in my basement (one of the last on the OLD table).

The scenario is an interesting one; Fabius Maximus has been avoiding combat with Hannibal, which is strategically prudent given the string of defeats Hannibal has inflicted upon the Legions of Rome. However the Republic is becoming frustrated by the ese "Fabian" tactics, and elect the hot headed  Marcus Mincinius Rufus to co-command of the army. Hannibal lays a trap for the Romans. A seemingly isolated detachment is dangled in front of Minicinius' forces as bait; he takes it and attacks with his half of the army. However, Hannibal has the bulk of his army nearby, and once the bait is taken, his remaining forces march to reinforce that command. Meanwhile, Hannibal has also set an ambush on the Roman left flank, concealed in a deep gully. Fabius half of the army watches events unfold from a nearby mountain top (the action thus sometimes being referred to as The Battle of the Clouds), and when Mincinius forces start to falter, Fabius and his troop rush their aid, averting a complete disaster for Rome.

Fabius and his men atop the mountains.

Gauls acting as "bait"

Note the gully to the far Left...

For the HAVOC game, we only had 3 out of 8 players. There's Dave to the left and Devin to the right.

Dave recruited a third player and I became the fourth. With only half the players, I removed the Bait, Fabius' men, and the Ambush. That made the game playable in the time allowed, but removed the twists that made the scenario more interesting.

Devin and I had the Romans, and of course attacked at the earliest opportunity!

In these Punic Was battles, even without any "Punic Faith" on Hannibal's side, most often the superior Carthaginian cavalry overwhelms their Latin opponents, and then turns upon the flanks of the Roman infantry.

Not so this time!

The Romans won a lot more than their fair share of the Cavalry battles, and it was the Carthaginians looking out for their flanks. The Roman Quincunx formations actually managed to do well in combat for a change as w2ell, resulting in victory for Mincinius... SPQR!  We all had a lot of fun with this game, which moved along very nicely and finished in about 3 hours. I do love To the Strongest!, and even more for convention games!

  1. A great looking game Peter, shame you had so few players turn up. I find TtS "ok" - our Friday host Julian likes them, so we play them reasonably often, or the FK&P variant - I prefer other rulesets to be honest but like I say, they are ok, and hexes do have some advantages in relation to "discussions" about movement or firing distances etc!

    1. Sure, not everyone will love TtS! (I do), but, as in your case, I've met very few people who dislike it to the degree that they won't play it. I've been trying to get Tts! to catch on at HAVOC for more than 10 years now, with only limited success. By contrast, it has been a resounding success at Historicon, where I first introduced it in 2014; last year a group us ran six games with TtS! there, all of them filled (and all a lot fun, as was this game). There is a small Ancients tournament that day at HAVOC, so I don't know if that impacts interest.

  2. As Keith says, this is a fab looking game. Yes, too bad that you could not recruit the full roster of players. I like TtS! It provides a fast-paced and action-packed game. Nice job!

    1. Thanks, Ray. TtS! works great with big games, as long as there are enough players. I will try to remember to plan for no more than 6 players for HAVOC in the future.

  5. That is a big game! Nicely done to get it finished with just four players and in three hours. I haven't played TtS! in years. I really should get it on the table again.

    Cheers,

    1. Thanks, Aaron. I do really enjoy Tts!, and the four us had a very good time with the game, which is what matters most!

  8. Great looking game! - having extra players can help with the rules etc. and speed up game play turns, another words More players means more eyes to catch missed rules :o)

    1. Thanks, Phil. That can be true, especially with a core of experienced players. TtS! is very easy to teach and pick up, too!

  9. The game looked great Peter. What happened to the other four players? Did any send their apologies?

    1. Thanks, Lawrence. One advantage of the Tabletops Events system that Historicon and HAVOC both use is that the GM can see who is registered and how many spots are open, but that only includes pre-reg, and some guys don't decide to attend until the last minute, and thus register for open slots the day of, so you don't really know who will be there unless the game is filled when pre=registration closes.
I checked, and Devin and Dave were pre-registered (only), so as it was, I was lucky to get a 4th player.

  10. Good looking troops for a game on the old table. Certainly seen a lot of lead footprints over the years.

  11. Great looking game. What a shame that your "twists" had to be abandoned.

    1. The scenario could be tweaked for 4 players, but not easily on the fly!
Hopefully HAVOC can build attendance - IMHO, it's well worth the trip[ from anywhere in New England and even Eastern NY state.
