Hittite Refurb Project: Chariots, part 2

The second set of six Hittite chariots, refurbished from the collection of Bill McHugh thunders off the painting table!

In my mind, I think of these as "Type 2" Chariots. Some have armored horses, others don't. Most have three crew figures

All of this type of chariot have this multilayer raised elliptical design on the sides of the cabs.

The design reminded me of the Eye(s) of God, so I painted them to suggest that. 'Ol Blue Eyes!

Here's the second pair of chariots of this style.

Reigns were added once again, using painted dental floss tape.

Green "eyes" for this duo!

Armored warriors in these.

The chariots had contrasting borders added to the cabs, which a few had, but most lacked.

Talk about "catching the Red Eye"...

Almost all of the chariots needed repair work; it seems like maybe the right hand vehicle left the shop prematurely, judging by that axle!

Over all ,definitely a heavier design that the light Egyptian vehicles.

  1. Beautifully painted chariots and crew, and the reins give a surprising sense of movement and speed.

    1. Thank you, Peter. The reins remind me of the Ben Hur Chariot race scene, which is probably why they add to the illusion of movement.

  2. Nice work again Peter. The reins are definitely worth the effort.

  3. Here additions look good, Peter. How many total Hittite chariots to you have in this army? Are these carts from Old Glory?

    1. There will be `18 chariots total in the Hittite army. I have no idea who the manufacturer is. They don't look like Old Glory to me, but I've never seen a picture of their Hittites.

    2. Sorry for my nonsensical first sentence. Responding on the phone is a difficult task for me...It should have read, "These additions look good." At least my questions were interpretable and answerable! The horses remind me of Old Glory but you have seen many more Old Glory horses than I!

    3. I am at least as bad typing on the phone (not great anywhere, actually!), but your meaning was clear enough to me, Jon. Teh sculpting style, especially for the crew figures, seems far to slim and delicate for OG, but I could still be wrong. Also, OG only lists one pack of Hittite Chariots (although I suppose there could be one of each type in the pack of 3).

    1. Merci, Phil. It has me thinking of going back and adding reins to some of my other chariots. I did them on the first chariots I ever did 40 years ago, which I still have.

  6. Beautiful chariots, I am particularly struck by the way you have depicted the reigns. Wonderful animation bringing all to life.

    1. Thanks! I figured out a better way to "mass produce" them this time, so that helped with 18 chariots = 36 reins. It should really be 72 (2 per horse), but the impression of reins with one per horse seems to work pretty well, and that's half the work! :-)

    1. LOL, Gary. My Mom was in the hospital a few days this week, and my brother in law is visiting for a few days, so that has delayed the beginning of the 1st Battle of Newbury! I did get a few more details (and my own QRS) sorted out so that everything is 100% ready to go now!
