The Snappy Nappy Winter 1807 Campaign
On the Russian/Polish Frontier in Eastern Poland, Mid-January 1807
In the last four months Napoleon and the French have been spectacularly successful, smashing the Prussian army at the twin battles of Jena and Auerstadt in October 1806, then pursuing and destroying the remnants of the once proud Prussian army all across Prussia and Poland. The Czar attempted to intervene in aid of his Prussian ally but in recent weeks was rudely hustled out of Poland by the French. Now Napoleon is settling his troops into winter quarters along the Russian frontier in the 175 mile strip of land between Koenigsburg in the north and Warsaw in the south. The French formations are battered and badly in need of rest and reinforcements. While his reputation stands supreme on the Continent, Napoleon knows that he has failed to bring the Russians to heel, and a victory on their part could reinvigorate his enemies.
The Orders of Battle that follow are approximate, and will depend upon the number of players participating. Generally, each player will command a French Corps or an Allied "Division". The Commander and Chief for each side will also have their respective Guard units as a personal command (although that could be delegated if there are large numbers of participants). As if today we have 14 confirmed players, and expect to add a number more in the next 3 weeks before the day of the game on Sunday May, 1 2016.

As this game is going to include supply, and may need as many as 20 supply wagons for each side, it was clear we'd never have enough model wagons, even if we used some limbers as stand ins. So, after looking at and discussing other options, I made a bunch of Wagon markers using photos of my 28mm wagons glued onto 1 x 1.75' Litko 3mm MDF bases. I chose a different image, facing a different way for Russian and French wagons, and also painted the bare wood edges light green or light blue respectively.
21 Russian markers
21 French markers
42 all together!
There are also a few fortified towns on the map...
My friend Chuck from high school, college, and beyond hand made this castle/fortress out of plywood, etc, back in the early 1970's. It was originally intended for use with the figures from the old game, "Feudal", hence the holes.
It has been sitting in my basement unused for at least 25 years now, but this campaign gives me an excuse to haul it out. It was originally painted black, so I hit it with a fresh coat of flat grey spray paint. Looks pretty presentable as is, I think.
Levin August von Bennigsen (1745 - 1826), by George Dawe, 1820.
I know that Greg has been making hills, etc for the many individual tables we will be using as well, and James has been putting the finishing touches on the scenario itself. This should be great! It looks like I may be playing Bennigsen (the Russian C-in-C) for the game. By coincidence I will be almost the same age that he was at Eylau. In that case, I hope I don't screw up too badly for Russia and the Czar. I hear that it is cold in Poland in January... bur much colder in Siberia!
All I can say is wow, that was quite a lot of work to put all that together. Nice idea about the transport.
ReplyDeleteIt's very much a team effort. James is doing the heavy lifting this year with the scenario design, player maps, table maps, OOB. Phil id providing most of the troops. Greg, Joe and I are assisting with the terrain etc for the individual tables. T minus 3 weeks!
DeleteGreat idea for the wagons and I like the fort really good to pull it out of reserve and say "you see there is a reason I've been keeping this for 25 years, a generation in storage!"
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks, Ian, and thanks... justification for all us pack rats!
DeleteI can see that this is going to be fun. I have always had a soft spot for the battle of Eylau, probably due to an SPI game we played a couple of times in the 80's.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting and of course includes Napoleon'd first real check, if not an outright defeat.
DeleteYou play them big back in the east. Best for all the players and enjoy Peter. Suggest the vodka is safely stored away. Have you booked the large refrigerated warehouse for climate conditions?
ReplyDeleteAwait the frozen reports from the east here in warm Paris by the sea.
Michael aka WR
If we'd had it last week we wouldn't have needed refrigeration, LOL! This one will be with 15mm figures per James. That will give us a little more maneuver room on the 4 x 6 foot tables at the venue.
DeleteI must confess a growing inclination to try doing one of these at Historicon , perhaps for 2018 or 2019. We'll see.
after your pic of the fortress, I am thinking more seriously of making a miniature of the Hagia Sophie from Constantinople. I have looked at some layouts but never felt I was capable. Now I am think again.
ReplyDeleteI certainly think you could do it using foam core or MDF plywood. The tricky part is the curved portions of the building, domes, etc. You can buy doors and windows although they might not be suitable for this iconic Byzantine structure!
