Raab

The Battle of Raab: June 14, 1809

Table Size: 6 x 9 feet
Troop Scale: 1 Infantry unit = 900 men, 1 Cavalry unit = 600 men, 1 Artillery = 12 guns.

Background: Eugene has pursued Erzherzog Johann's army out of Italy; near the fortress of Raab, Johann has incorporated large numbers of infantry and cavalry of the Hungarian Insurrectio, untried and ill equipped troops of dubious quality. Under orders from Napoleon to clear all Austrian resistance from the territory South of the Danube, Eugene's army attacks. Johann has chosen a strong defensive position to make his stand.

Map: The Kis-Meyer Farm is Class III terrain and may hold 2 defending units; all other buildings are Class II. The Pancza stream has steep banks which prevent cavalry and artillery from crossing the western 2/3 of it it except at the bridges. Along the eastern 1/3 of the Pancza, the banks become more marshy and become passable to cavalry, but artillery may only cross at a single ford, the location of which is known to the Austrians but not the French. The Pancza counts as Class III terrain throughout. The Szabadhegy Heights count as Class II terrain.

Scenario Rules: French units contacting the Eastern 1/3 of the Pancza stream may search for the Ford. To do so, they must be in contact with the stream and expend 1 MOVE segment searching. Roll a D6 for each 6” segment searched; on a roll of 6 the Ford is located in that segment. If 5 segments are searched without finding the Ford, by default it is located in the 6th, although it must still be searched for as above.

Hungarian Insurrectio: Infantry and cavalry of the Insurrectio may NOT be rallied if they rout. Lost UI may be rallied as usual from units that have not routed. Such units are marked with an *

Deployment: Is as shown on the Deployment Map.

Reinforcements: None

Victory Conditions: the Village of Szabadhegy, the top level of the Szabadhegy Heights, The Kismayer Farm, and the northern exit of the easternmost road off the table are each worth one Victory Point. The battle begins at 12 Noon, and ends when the 12th French MOVE card has been played (6PM) if not sooner. If one side fails Army Morale, then the enemy wins a Decisive Victory if they control more VP than the enemy, a Major Victory if equal to the enemy, and a Minor Victory otherwise. If neither side fails Army Morale, the side with the most Victory points wins, counting an additional 1 VP for the side with more Army Morale Points at the end of the game.

Sassanid Persian Javelinmen #1

Next out of the lead pile and into the ranks of the painted is a unit of Old Glory 28mm Javelinmen.

I like the animation of these figures.

The sculpting on their cane shields works well, too.

As usual, minor distinctions allow the unit to become two smaller, 2 stand units if needed.

They'll probably fight like rubbish, although perhaps a cut above the masses of Levy Spearmen.!

Palmyran Regular Light Cavalry

Galloping off the Painting desk next are 2 units of Palmyran Regular light cavalry.

These guys have pretty much the same uniform as the regular foot archers.

Blue-green jackets with marroon - red trip at the collars, cuffs, and front seams.

Maroon red pants with blue green stripes down the seams

and maroon red leather work.

Where the first unit is riding Palomino horses, the second is riding light Chestnut horses.

The figures in this second unit have their  jackets open to show their shirts underneath.

Once again, the officers wear "reversed colors" from the men.

Maroon-red jackets with blue-green trim, and blue green pants with maroon-red trim for them.

Sassanid Archers #2

More lead pours off the painting table on its way to Historicon in 1 week!

This is the second unit of  Archers for my Sassanid Persian army. they are Old Glory 28mm figures once again (see the previous post).

I "recruited" a figure from the pack of Sassanid Javelinmen (forthcoming soon) to act as as "officer"  to make this unit look a bit more Persian.

The color scheme of course is radically different from their Palmyran counterparts.

These formed bowmen sometimes seem like they are mere speed bumps for the shock troops... until they get lucky and knock out a unit or two of them, at which point they're quite annoying!

Perplexing Palmyrene Paradox

Here's the 2nd unit of Palmyran archers joining the army of Odenathus...

For this unit I went with mid blue jackets and dark red pants, rather than the blue green and marroon shades of the first unit.

This way they still have the Palmyran "uniform", but are easily distinguished as different  units.

Actually, wherever possible, I paint ancient troops so that 2 base subunits can be distinguished, because that's the unit size for my Charlie Sweet inspired gridded adaptation of the old FGY rules, Legion!, which I called Legio Quaternarius

Now for the paradox; it wasn't until I posted these pictures that I realized that the figures for the Palmyran Archers and the Sassanid Archers are the same! Now granted that they are from the same part of the world in the same era, so similarity would hardly be shocking.  So I went back and checked the order and the 30 figure pack labels. Yep, they were ordered and labeled as 1 pack each of Sassanid and Palmyran labels; probably an error on the part of however bagged the figures out of the mold. I am absolutely certain that old Glory would send me another bag of the correct figures gratis, because a similar error did happen once with a previous order. I sent Theresa pictures of the label and the figures and had the correct figures in my hand for free in less than a week. In this case though, it just doesn't matter enough to quibble about, especially paying a little over 60 cents a figure with the Army Card discount. I will however let Theresa know just from the standpoint of their internal quality control. The Old Glory Catalog is immense, and it is easy to see how errors could occur, especially with troops from the Ancient era!

V Romans

Back to the Men pof Rome for today!

Black Tree Designs 28mm, "Auxilia advancing, drawn Gladius"

Part of the Legion of Green!  :-)

Once again, the excellent sculpting makes my painting look pretty good!

Tremble, enemies of Rome!

Sassy Sassanid Archers

I need a boatload more Sassanid Persian troops for my Historicon game, so here is the first of many such units:

There was a guy who played in the band with me in college who looked a lot like the beaded fellow!

The strength of the Sassanid army lies in their heavily armored cavalry and Elephants; their infantry is mostly rubbish. The archers are probably the best of a sorry lot!

Old Glory 28mm figures. Lots more of them to come in the next 10 days! I am behind on posting so it looks like they should all be safely ready for the convention.

Seeing these pictures up close I realize that these troops are missing something - the flesh highlight on the faces; that was also true for the Palmyran Archers and two more units painted in the same batch.  I have gone back and added that. Much better!
